Abstract:
We report on some of the options available for the provision of secure
electronic mail in the UK academic community. A large-scale survey was
made of the types of mail user agents in widespread use in JANET, and
studied the opportunities for integrating them with the Prettty
Good Privacy program so that easy and seamless secure email could be
provided to a non-specialist community. We also studied the problems
concerning the rapid and reliable provision of authenticated encryption
keys to a population measured in millions. The necessity of good
documentation, adherence to de facto standards and co-operation
with the international community was also recognized. We conclude with
recommendations for future work, including the development of integrated
mailers, the establishment of a distributed key service and
certification authorities, and the development of high-quality
education, training and documentation.
